Alibaba Cloud lands in Brazil with first South American region

Alibaba Cloud is making a major push into Latin America, launching its first cloud region in Brazil and bringing two new data centers online as the Chinese technology giant steps up its global AI infrastructure race.

The new region, located in São Paulo, gives Brazilian businesses, startups, developers and public institutions access to Alibaba Cloud services hosted on local infrastructure. It also marks the company's first cloud region anywhere in South America.

The move comes as demand for cloud computing and AI infrastructure continues to surge across the region.

Two Data Centers, Local Infrastructure

Alibaba Cloud's new Brazilian region provides a broad portfolio of services spanning computing, storage, containers, networking, cybersecurity, databases, big data and cloud-native applications.

The company says the local infrastructure is designed for workloads that require low latency, resilience and stronger data governance, giving Brazilian customers an alternative to running their applications from cloud regions located outside the country.

The two-data-center setup also provides greater redundancy. Businesses running mission-critical applications can use the infrastructure for higher availability and disaster recovery.

For customers, that means data and applications can stay physically closer to their Brazilian users while reducing the network distance between workloads and end users.

AI Is the Bigger Story

Cloud infrastructure is only part of Alibaba's plan. The company says it will introduce a suite of enterprise-grade agentic AI services in the Brazilian region, positioning the new infrastructure as a foundation for companies looking to deploy AI applications locally.

That could become increasingly important as businesses move beyond experimenting with AI models and begin deploying autonomous AI agents capable of handling multi-step tasks.

Alibaba's Brazil expansion is part of a much larger investment push. The company has committed roughly $53 billion to AI infrastructure, reflecting the enormous amount of computing power required to compete in the global AI market.

Alibaba Is Challenging AWS and Microsoft

Brazil is already a major cloud market, with global heavyweights including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud operating infrastructure in the country.

Alibaba is now looking to carve out its own position. The company previously launched its first Latin American cloud region in Mexico in 2025. With Brazil now online, Alibaba Cloud says its global network has expanded to 106 availability zones across 31 regions.
