Amazon finances record-breaking off-grid gas power plant in Texas to fuel AI expansion

Amazon has acquired a site in Pecos County, West Texas, to fund and build a dedicated 7.65-gigawatt natural gas power plant. Known as GW Ranch, the facility is designed to run completely off-grid to power a massive new artificial intelligence data center campus without relying on the local electrical grid.

Record-Breaking On-Site Generation

Permit filings and energy tracking data compiled by market intelligence firm Cleanview reveal the extraordinary scale of the GW Ranch installation:

  • Generation Capacity: The facility will feature 35 natural gas turbines capable of producing up to 7.65 gigawatts of electricity, making it larger than any existing operational natural gas power plant in the United States.

  • Emissions Thresholds: State regulatory permits authorize the facility to emit up to 33 million metric tons of greenhouse gases annually, a theoretical ceiling that surpasses the permitted emissions of any single industrial facility or coal-fired power plant nationwide.

  • Water Usage Protections: To minimize strain on local arid watersheds, Amazon confirmed the campus will utilize non-potable, brackish groundwater for cooling infrastructure.


Bypassing Grid Bottlenecks and Consumer Rate Hikes

The decision to build "behind-the-meter," generating electricity directly on-site rather than pulling from the ERCOT grid, allows Amazon to bring its high-density AI computing infrastructure online years faster than standard utility interconnection queues permit.


Responding to criticism regarding fossil fuel usage, an Amazon spokesperson stated that generating power on-site prevents passing infrastructure expansion costs onto local consumers. "Amazon believes in paying the full costs of powering our operations," the company said in a statement, emphasizing that the off-grid design protects Texas families from utility rate spikes while the site prepares for future grid-connected renewable integration.


Balancing AI Compute Demands with Net-Zero Pledges

The Texas project highlights the acute tension tech leaders face as compute requirements for frontier artificial intelligence models clash with corporate sustainability goals. While Amazon reiterated its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under Climate Pledge initiatives, environmental organizations warn that off-grid fossil fuel generation risks driving up regional emissions.


Amazon noted it is actively evaluating options to co-locate large-scale solar arrays and battery energy storage systems at the Pecos County site over time, while highlighting its broader portfolio of 40 renewable energy projects generating nearly 10 gigawatts across Texas.
