Back-to-back OpenAI C-suite departures raise questions as IPO looms

OpenAI is facing fresh questions about its leadership stability after two senior executives announced their departures within days of each other, just as the ChatGPT maker prepares for a potential initial public offering. Former Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap announced on August 11 that he was leaving OpenAI after eight years to start a new venture. Two days later, Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser also announced her departure after less than a year in the role.

The timing has attracted attention because OpenAI is simultaneously preparing for a potential public listing that could value the company at more than $1 trillion.

Brad Lightcap Leaves After Eight Years

Lightcap was one of OpenAI's longest-serving senior executives. He joined the company in 2018 and became COO in 2022, working closely with CEO Sam Altman as OpenAI transformed from a research organization into one of the world's most valuable AI companies.

His responsibilities had already changed earlier this year. In April, he moved from the COO position to lead special projects before ultimately deciding to leave the company. Lightcap said he plans to “start something new,” while indicating that he remains supportive of OpenAI and expects to stay involved in the broader AI ecosystem.

Revenue Chief Denise Dresser Also Exits

Dresser's departure is arguably more surprising because she had been at OpenAI for only eight months. She joined the company in December after previously holding senior positions at Salesforce, including leadership of Slack. Her role became particularly important after Lightcap stepped away from day-to-day operational responsibilities.

OpenAI has already named Dali Rajic, the former president and COO of cybersecurity company Wiz, as her replacement.

The rapid change at the top of OpenAI's commercial organization comes as the company competes aggressively with Anthropic for enterprise customers.

Why the Departures Matter

Neither Lightcap nor Dresser has suggested that their departures are directly connected to OpenAI's IPO plans. However, the exits add to a much larger leadership reshuffle. Other senior executives, including Fidji Simo and marketing chief Kate Rouch, have also departed or moved into different roles during 2026.

That has prompted questions about whether OpenAI is experiencing normal growth-related restructuring or something deeper as it prepares to become a public company.

Still, OpenAI's business is expanding rapidly. Its annualized revenue has reportedly climbed toward $40 billion, while the company recently completed a transaction allowing current and former employees to sell roughly $7 billion worth of shares.
