FTC launches voice cloning challenge with $25,000 prize to combat AI-enabled fraud

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has begun accepting submissions for its Voice Cloning Challenge, a public competition offering a $25,000 grand prize for the best solution to detect and prevent fraudulent use of AI-enabled voice cloning.

The challenge, announced in mid-November 2023, seeks submissions that address the following key areas:

  • Detection: Accurately identifying AI-cloned voices in real-time or post-recording.

  • Prevention: Implementing safeguards to prevent unauthorized access to and misuse of voice cloning technology.

  • Consumer education: Raising awareness about the dangers of voice cloning scams and empowering individuals to protect themselves.

The FTC emphasizes that this is an "exploratory challenge," meaning there are no predefined solutions. The agency is open to a wide range of ideas, from technical solutions like voice biometrics or anomaly detection algorithms to social and educational approaches aimed at building consumer resilience against deepfake scams.

The competition is open to individuals, teams, and companies worldwide. Submissions are being accepted until January 12th, 2024, and will be judged by a panel of experts based on their:

  • Practical feasibility: Can the solution be implemented effectively and at scale?

  • Impact on corporate accountability: Does the solution hold companies accountable for preventing voice cloning misuse?

  • Consumer burden: Does the solution place undue burden or inconvenience on consumers?

  • Resilience to technological advancements: Can the solution adapt to and stay ahead of evolving deepfake technologies?

The FTC's Voice Cloning Challenge is a significant step towards mitigating the risks posed by this emerging technology. By encouraging innovation and fostering collaboration, the agency hopes to equip consumers and businesses with the tools they need to stay safe in the age of deep fakes.

So, if you have a bright idea for protecting yourself and others from AI-powered voice scams, head over to the FTC's website and submit your entry. You might just be the answer in this fight against deep fake fraud!
