Google slashes AI Plus subscription price and doubles storage in major value push

Google has upgraded its entry-level AI subscription, cutting the price of its AI Plus plan to $4.99 per month while doubling the included cloud storage from 200GB to 400GB. The move strengthens Google’s position in the increasingly competitive AI subscription market as tech companies race to bundle more services at lower cost.

The updated pricing reduces the AI Plus plan from its original $7.99 monthly fee to $4.99, effectively bringing it closer to mass-market affordability. The change applies immediately for new subscribers, while existing users will see the lower rate reflected in their next billing cycle.

Analysts say the adjustment signals a broader strategy by Google to expand Gemini adoption by lowering entry barriers and competing more aggressively with rival AI subscription offerings.

Storage capacity doubled across Google services

Alongside the price reduction, Google has doubled cloud storage for AI Plus users from 200GB to 400GB. The storage applies across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, making the plan more attractive for users already embedded in Google’s ecosystem.

The upgrade positions AI Plus as a hybrid offering, combining AI model access with expanded cloud storage, a model increasingly common among major tech platforms.

Expanded AI features remain unchanged

Despite the price cut, Google has kept the core AI capabilities of the AI Plus plan intact. Subscribers continue to receive enhanced access to Gemini models, higher usage limits compared to free users, and tools such as Deep Research and productivity features integrated across Google services.

Additional features include AI-powered assistance in Gmail and NotebookLM, along with access to multimodal capabilities for generating and interacting with content.

The move comes amid heightened competition in the AI subscription space, particularly following Apple’s recent push into AI-powered services. Industry observers suggest Google’s decision is a direct response to increasing pressure to make premium AI tools more accessible to mainstream users.

By lowering prices while increasing storage, Google is positioning AI Plus as a high-value entry point into its broader AI ecosystem.

Looking ahead

The changes are expected to accelerate adoption of Google’s AI ecosystem while intensifying competition among major tech firms. As AI becomes more central to everyday digital services, subscription models are emerging as a key battleground for user engagement and long-term platform loyalty.
