Intel Soars 24% in biggest single-day surge since 1987

Intel Corp (INTC) shares staged a historic rally on Friday, April 24, 2026, soaring 23.6% to close at an all-time high of $82.57 following a blowout earnings report that shattered Wall Street's expectations. The gain marks Intel's most explosive single-day performance since 1987, effectively erasing years of underperformance and pushing the company’s market capitalization past $414 billion.

The rally was fueled by a massive "earnings beat" and a strategic pivot toward "agentic AI" infrastructure, which has reignited demand for Intel’s high-end server processors.

The numbers behind the surge

Intel’s first-quarter results revealed a company firing on all cylinders after a decade of manufacturing struggles. To begin with, the chipmaker reported $13.58 billion in revenue, far exceeding analyst estimates of $12.3 billion. Adjusted net income surged 156% to $1.5 billion while arnings per share (EPS) hit $0.29, crushing the anticipated $0.01.

Revenue in the Data Center and AI division jumped 22% to $5.1 billion. In a surprising twist, demand for AI-ready CPUs was so high that Intel successfully sold off inventory that had previously been written off.

The "agentic AI" shift

While Nvidia has long dominated the "training" phase of AI with its GPUs, 2026 has seen a structural shift toward agentic AI, autonomous agents that require the high-speed serial processing power of Central Processing Units (CPUs).

CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took the helm in early 2025, credited this shift for the company’s resurgence. "The next wave of AI isn't just about training models; it's about executing complex, multi-step agents at scale," Tan told investors. "This is increasing the fundamental need for Intel’s Xeon architecture across the globe."

Strategic wins and future outlook

The stock's ascent was further bolstered by several major milestones achieved under Tan’s leadership:

  • Foundry momentum: Intel secured a landmark deal to manufacture next-generation chips for Tesla, solidifying its position as a viable "Western alternative" to TSMC.

  • The 14A race: The company confirmed it is ahead of schedule with its 14A (1.4nm) manufacturing process, with multiple customers already evaluating the technology for 2028 production.

  • Nvidia partnership: A critical $5 billion investment from rival Nvidia late last year has stabilized Intel’s balance sheet, allowing for aggressive R&D spending.

Market reaction

The Intel surge lifted the entire semiconductor sector, with the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index hitting a record high during an 18-day winning streak. Despite the 24% jump, some analysts remain cautious, noting that the stock is currently trading at a significant premium. However, for most of Wall Street, Friday’s move signaled the official end of Intel’s "lost decade."
