In a landmark deal described as a "bellwether" for the gaming industry, Roblox Corporation has reached a $12.5 million settlement with the state of Nevada to resolve allegations that the platform failed to adequately protect its youngest users from predators and harmful content.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced the agreement on April 15, 2026, following an investigation into the platform’s architecture. While Roblox disputed the claims of negligence, the company opted to settle to avoid a formal lawsuit, agreeing to a series of nationwide technical changes that will transform how millions of children interact with the game.
Financial terms of the deal
The settlement funds are earmarked for direct community impact and safety education. $10 million will be paid over the next three years to fund recreational and developmental programs for Nevada youth. $1 million will launch a statewide online safety awareness initiative.
Additionally, a new specialist position will be funded to help police and state officials navigate the platform’s data during criminal investigations.
The new "Roblox Kids" & "Roblox Select" framework
Coinciding with the settlement, Roblox is launching a unified safety architecture designed to automate protection based on a user’s verified age.
Roblox Kids (Ages 5–8): These accounts will feature a distinct background color for easy parental monitoring. All communication is disabled by default, and access is restricted to games with "Minimal" or "Mild" maturity ratings.
Roblox Select (Ages 9–15): These accounts allow access to "Moderate" content but maintain strict parental oversight. Default chat settings remain restricted, and these users cannot use encrypted messaging.
The "Wait and See" Policy: To prevent minors from being "guinea pigs" for new content, games must first be played by users aged 16+ for a set period. This allows Roblox to collect moderation data before the game is eligible for the Kids or Select catalogs.
Enhanced verification & monitoring
Under the settlement, Roblox will implement enhanced age verification for all users, utilizing facial estimation technology and ID checks. The platform has also pledged to monitor account activity more aggressively to catch adult users attempting to masquerade as minors. Furthermore, nighttime notifications will be restricted for all minor accounts to promote healthier digital habits.
The "Nevada Clause" within the agreement specifies that if Roblox reaches a more favorable settlement with another state in the future, Nevada’s terms must be adjusted to match.
With over 140 lawsuits currently pending across the U.S., this agreement likely represents the first of many structural changes for the world's largest digital playground.
