Tesla shares plunge 14% on carmaker’s worst day in years

Tesla Inc. suffered one of its worst single-day market routs in years on Thursday, July 23, 2026, as investors recoiled from disappointing second-quarter earnings and mounting anxiety over the electric vehicle pioneer’s multi-billion-dollar investments in artificial intelligence and robotics. Shares of the automaker plummeted 14.5% in New York trading, erasing tens of billions in market capitalization and cutting Chief Executive Elon Musk’s personal net worth by an estimated $18 billion in a single session.

The dramatic sell-off was triggered by a stark profitability miss in Tesla’s Q2 financial results. While the company posted record vehicle deliveries and top-line revenue, net profit shrank to $0.31 per share, falling well short of the $0.51 per share consensus estimate compiled by Wall Street analysts. The earnings drag was largely driven by thinning automotive profit margins and a massive surge in capital expenditures, which reached $5.8 billion for the quarter. The heavy outlays pushed Tesla into negative free cash flow of $1.1 billion, marking the company's first quarterly cash burn in more than two years.

Slow Timelines for Robotaxis and Optimus

During Wednesday evening’s earnings call, analysts questioned Musk regarding the commercial readiness and logistical timelines for Tesla’s flagship autonomous initiatives: the Cybercab/Robotaxi driverless fleet and the Optimus humanoid robot.

Musk has long pitched both endeavors as transformative catalysts capable of generating near-infinite future revenue. However, slow deployment schedules, regulatory hurdles, and limited real-world availability continue to delay widespread monetization.

While Musk attempted to reassure investors by reiterating that Optimus would eventually become Tesla’s most valuable product, he cautioned that scaling complex humanoid robotics presents unprecedented engineering friction. Similarly, he acknowledged that the Robotaxi rollout remains intentionally constrained out of safety concerns and fear of regulatory blowback.

For Wall Street, the vague timelines underscored a growing disconnect between Tesla's traditional, margin-pressured automotive core and its costly transformation into an AI power.

Ripple Effects Across Mega-Cap Tech

Tesla's single-day decline made it the worst performer among the "Magnificent Seven" megacap technology firms, fanning broader market jitters over high-stakes AI spending across Silicon Valley. Coupled with a simultaneous pullback in Alphabet shares following elevated capital expenditure guidance, the broader tech sell-off wiped out over $767 billion in combined market value on Thursday alone.

Despite the immediate financial shockwave, Tesla leadership maintains that heavy up-front infrastructure investments are essential to securing long-term dominance in autonomous transport.
