Elon Musk’s xAI has unleashed a major update to its artificial intelligence ecosystem, debuting the Grok 4.3 reasoning model alongside a high-fidelity voice cloning suite. The release, announced on April 30, 2026, signals a dual strategy of aggressive price-cutting and a push into multimodal "agentic" capabilities.

The update arrives at a pivotal moment for the company, following its recent $20 billion Series E funding and its historic acquisition by SpaceX earlier this year.
Grok 4.3: High intelligence at half the price
Grok 4.3 replaces the 4.20 series as xAI’s flagship API model. While it maintains the massive 1-million-token context window, the real story is its efficiency. The model boasts a 40% reduction in input costs and a 60% reduction in output costs compared to its predecessor.
Benchmark performance: Grok 4.3 scored a 53 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, placing it ahead of competitors like Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Muse Spark.
"Thinking" by default: Unlike previous versions where reasoning was a toggle, Grok 4.3 now "thinks" (performs internal reasoning) before every response.
Speed: Optimized for production, the model consistently hits 100 tokens per second, making it one of the fastest frontier-level models available via API.
Custom voices: Cloning in under two minutes
Perhaps the most significant addition is the "Custom Voices and Voice Library" suite. This tool allows developers and business users to create a high-fidelity digital twin of a human voice using just 120 seconds of reference audio.
To combat the rising threat of deepfakes, xAI has implemented a two-stage verification process. Users must read a randomly generated phrase in real-time to prove "liveness" before the system will finalize a clone. This prevents the unauthorized cloning of voices from pre-existing recordings or YouTube clips.
Once verified, the cloned voices can be deployed across 28 languages for use in:
Voice agents: Real-time customer service bots that speak with a brand’s specific tone
Audiobook narration: Authors can "read" their own books without spending weeks in a studio
Gaming: Dynamic NPC dialogue that maintains character consistency throughout hundreds of hours of gameplay
Integration with Tesla and the "Colossus 2" cluster
Industry analysts see this as a foundational step for Tesla’s "Optimus" robot and the in-car experience. By maturing the Voice Agent API, xAI is preparing the infrastructure for a more conversational, personalized AI assistant that sounds less like a machine and more like a chosen individual.
The launch is powered by xAI's "Colossus 2" supercomputer cluster, which Elon Musk recently revealed is simultaneously training seven different models. According to the company's roadmap, a 1-trillion-parameter Grok 4.4 is expected to follow in just two to three weeks, as the company races toward the 10-trillion-parameter milestone of Grok 5 later this year.
The Grok 4.3 API is now live for developers at $1.25 per million input tokens, while the voice cloning feature is included at no extra cost beyond standard text-to-speech rates.
