Truth in the era of artificial media: Protecting Actuality

Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly thereby enabling the creation of content that shows less of a difference  between reality and computer-generated fabrication. This not only affects celebrities but also opens avenues for malicious actors to impersonate individuals, exploiting vulnerabilities in security systems.

Enterprises face risks due to the proliferation of AI tools, with deepfakes being used to cut access controls and engage in phishing attempts. The security bridge is further complicated as hackers target AI applications, demanding vast amounts of data. With each new content-generation tool, the threat multiplies.

Leading organizations are taking proactive measures employing policies and technologies to detect harmful content and educate employees about potential risks. Interestingly, the same generative AI tools used for malicious purposes can be harnessed by enterprises to predict and identify attacks and having a strategic advantage.

Social engineering schemes relying on personal interaction, are evolving with artificially generated content requiring less time investment to create a convincing personal touch. This wave of content, often impersonating trusted sources, poses a bigger  problem.

Currently, there is a considerable gap between AI's ability to produce authentic content and people's capability to differentiate it. Despite a majority of people claiming to discern AI-generated content, a significant portion remains unsure. The increasing human-like quality of AI-generated content challenges notions of it being robotic.

Malicious actors leverage AI-generated content for various attacks:

1. Phishing: AI tools enable fraudsters to craft convincing, error-free messages with relevant context, making phishing attempts harder to ignore.

2. Deepfakes: Advances in deepfake technology now facilitate convincing impersonation, as seen in incidents where CEOs fell victim to scammers.

3. Misinformation: AI tools helps social media campaigns, allowing attackers to create and spread misinformation at scale.

Enterprises, however are not defenseless. Proactive steps include maintaining suspicion in online communications, verifying identities, and implementing multifactor authentication. Awareness remains crucial, with collaboration between enterprises and ecosystem partners key to staying abreast of evolving threats.

Effective tools for identifying harmful content are emerging, employing AI to assess the authenticity of images, video, and text. Training data's scale, diversity, and freshness play a pivotal role, allowing AI models to recognize subtle indicators of synthetic content.

As the problem persists, the game between enterprises and bad people continues. Quantum computing, still on the horizon, presents both challenges and opportunities. 

Quantum machine learning's potential to generate more accurate models and predict attacks could reshape cybersecurity. While hackers might exploit this technology, enterprises can leverage on it to enhance their defenses by predicting and preventing attacks more effectively.

Being proactive in adopting advanced technologies and strategies will empower them to navigate the coming wave of artificial content and emerging challenges.
