Superintelligence now in sight as AI systems show undeniable self-improvement, Zuckerberg says

In a recent memo titled "Personal Superintelligence," Mark Zuckerberg declared that "superintelligence is now in sight" as the company's AI systems exhibit clear signs of self-improvement. Zuckerberg then outlined a vision where every individual possesses an AI capable of deeply understanding and helping them achieve their personal goals.

This bold statement, made public just ahead of Meta's latest earnings call, highlights the accelerating pace of AI development and Meta's aggressive investment in the field.

"Over the last few months, we have begun to see glimpses of our AI systems improving themselves," Zuckerberg wrote. "The improvement is slow for now, but undeniable."

Zuckerberg's vision for "personal superintelligence" stands in contrast to some industry views that focus solely on AI automating work. Instead, Meta aims to empower individuals, enabling them to "create what you want to see in the world, experience any adventure, be a better friend to those you care about, and grow to become the person you aspire to be."

He anticipates that personal devices like smart glasses, which can understand context from visual and auditory input, will become primary computing devices.

Meta has been making significant moves to accelerate its AI ambitions. In June 2025, the company officially formed the Meta Superintelligence Team (MSL), with Zuckerberg personally spearheading the initiative. This was followed by a strategic $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, a data labeling and machine learning operations company, granting Meta a 49% stake.

The company has also been on an aggressive talent acquisition spree, poaching top AI researchers and engineers from rivals like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Apple, often offering astronomical compensation packages.

While the specifics of Meta's self-improving AI remain under wraps, the broader advancements in areas like reinforcement learning, generative AI, and natural language processing are contributing to the increasing capabilities of AI systems. The concept of "agentic AI," where systems can take independent actions to achieve goals, is seen as a stepping stone towards more autonomous and self-improving intelligences.

However, the rapid march towards superintelligence also raises profound ethical questions and potential dangers. Concerns include job displacement, the potential for unintended consequences from highly autonomous systems, privacy risks, and the critical need for human oversight and control.

Zuckerberg himself acknowledged these challenges, stating that "superintelligence will raise novel safety concerns. We will need to be rigorous about mitigating these risks and careful about what we choose to open source."
